Your original and junkyard batteries gave up the ghost because they sat for more than 90 days without charging. The self-discharge rates of the individual battery packs (20 @ 6 NiMH batteries) vary, so the packs have become badly unbalanced. You appear to have the experience to open the packs, so open them and charge up each of the 20 sub-packs (preferably cycle them a few times) and your battery should work again.

Contact me if you want to sell your spare battery.

Hi,
I was looking to build a scooter from scratch to get to work and back, about 3km away (2miles?). Anyway I was wrapped to come across your page - your criteria were virtually identical to mine, and your execution and final product speak for themselves. Well Done. If you have any intention of sharing any info (like the CNC coordinate files or anything at all) I'd love to hear from you. I have a friend with a lathe and mill he has adapted to CNC with zero backlash bearing and steppers and controllers. If not I'll be going back to learn 3D modelling and work from scratch. Although I would probably be prepared to just buy one if available (or if you change your mind ;), I assume you have not planned to produce these due the high cost of the quality components let alone the labour and effort that would be required? Sadly most people seem to be after anything cheap or something for nothing these days :-|

Details?
What is the make (manufacturer) and model number of the brushless motor. (How much did it cost?)
Where did you get the A123 cells?
How do you charge the A123 cells properly? Did you build a custom charger or buy one (which one)?
What are you using for a motor controller (make and model number?)

This is beautiful work. The frame design is a masterpiece of engineering and workmanship. While the average scooter builder may not have the resources or funds required for a home-build of this quality, there are lessons we all can learn from here. Chassis regidity is a huge safety factor, as is the high current wiring. When building a high torque (very, in this case) scooter, always design with safety in mind. Do the math, and test your conductors under 3X full load conditions. The copper plates used here are safety items first, and will make the power come alive. OUTSTANDING!
Interesting... Another brushless lithium electric scooter :D Welcome to the small-EV secret club, where we snicker at those who run clunky SLAs and brushed DC motors.

I've built a scooter that had an (enormously oversized) BLDC motor on a Razor-like platform, and also am in the process of finishing a Razor scooter conversion that uses a custom in-wheel motor and lithium polymer batteries.

Check the build report on my site - under Snuffles and Snuffles Reloaded respectively.

Nice work! CNC and A123s... good stuff.
